About the D.O.R.S. Program

The Diocese of Reno Scholarship (D.O.R.S.) program helps make Catholic education accessible to students most in need. This needs-based scholarship helps parents who desire a Catholic education with financial assistance of up to $2,000 per year for the entire time a student attends a Diocese of Reno Catholic school, and continues to qualify. This could be from kindergarten through 12th grade. Students attending Bishop Manogue Catholic High School, St. Teresa of Avila School (Carson City), Little Flower School, Our Lady of the Snows School, and St. Albert the Great are recipients.

Why is There Such a High Need?

In fact, 355 students who applied for tuition assistance to attend Catholic schools in the previous school year. D.O.R.S. provided scholarships to 33 students last year. We would love to help more students in need.

Catholic Schools were established to provide a quality education grounded in Catholic principles to all children. Unfortunately, due to a number of circumstances, such increasing education costs, diminished attendance and wage fluctuations, tuition became too expensive for many families. There are still many parents who want to give their child a Catholic education, but because of financial limitations, it feels like an impossibility. D.O.R.S. was created to help these parents and children.

By donating to D.O.R.S. you are providing a student with an outstanding education that helps them grow mentally, morally and spiritually.

100% of donations are applied to the scholarship.

“Every morning we see our little angel go to school and we pray to God that we can continue seeing this scene every morning. When you came across, we knew it was possible to make this dream a reality. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we pray that you will forever be kept in God’s hands.”

History of the D.O.R.S. Program

Established in 2010, the Diocesan Scholarship was the joint vision of Bishop Emeritus Philip Straling and Bishop Randolph Calvo. Their goal was to provide funds to students who could not afford to attend Catholic Schools in the Reno area. In doing so, D.O.R.S. hopes to see more students succeed academically while they learn valuable moral principles and grow into responsible citizens.

Initially funded by an anonymous $100,000 donation and matched by the Diocese of Reno, these scholarships provide access to Catholic education to students most in need. In 2011-2012 this same donor offered a $50,000 matching contribution, and donors nearly met this challenge, raising an additional $42,000. For the year 2013, we raised $ 100,000.00, and the same anonymous donor matched that amount! In 2014, we raised over $44,000.00, which was again matched! In Spring 2014, the National Catholic Education Association, (NCEA) recognized the Diocese of Reno for our success by naming us the recipient of the Catherine T. McNamee, CSJ Award for “Outstanding Leadership in Promoting a Vision of Catholic Education that Welcomes and Serves Cultural and Economic Diversity and Enhances Services for Students with Special Needs.” The anonymous donor has agreed to match any donated contributions for this upcoming year. Please donate now to effectively double your contribution.

“Thank you for making it possible for me to go to Catholic school. I know I will succeed in life with the guidelines and teachings I am learning. I like how we learn about God. I’ve learned tons from this school. It’s the best! I like to go to Church every week. When my mom told me that I got a scholarship, I was just so excited. I also get excited whenever there’s a D.O.R.S. concert. I really like singing at the concert every year. Once again, thank you and God bless.”

Without your generosity and altruism, I would not be able to attend Bishop Manogue. It is with pleasure and honor that I write this thank you letter.
